Got some New Zealand travel questions and I figured at least one of us has to be from that place, right?

My friend and I plan to drive out of Auckland on a Monday and visit Hobbiton and Rotorua in one go, ending our day in Waitomo to tour the caves on the next day. The Hobbit tour lasts 2.5 hours and I figured we can soak in some Maori culture (and the hot springs) in Rotorua. Is this packed just right or should I add more activities?

After touring Waitomo’s caves on Tuesday, we’re planning to spend Tuesday night in either Lake Taupo or Turangi. From there, our plan is to spend Wednesday doing a day hike at the Tongariro Alpine Crossing on our way down to Wellington, but this seems a little...ambitious to put it lightly given what everyone says. Is it? Any alternatives?

Also, any other cool things I should check out along the way or things to be mindful of? Other than the cars, I mean.

Please take this Raptor as a token of thanks.

Something fun: Shop at a grocery chain that’s only in New Zealand. Only if you buy a couple things, that’s still something.

Auckland-Hobbiton-Rotovegas-Waitomo is about 5 hours driving. More if you leave auckland at morning rush hour. Add 2.5hrs Hobbiton tour plus half an hour’s screwing round and you’re not leaving yourself a lot of time in Rotorua.

Attractions in Rotorua worth doing are Rainbow Springs & the luge, Whakarewarewa Thermal Valley, and Hell’s Gate. If you only have time for one do Whakarewarewa. Allow time to wait for the Pohutu geyser to go off - it’s usually frequent but can be up to an hour between eruptions if it’s not in the mood.

Turangi to Wellington including the Tongariro crossing is doable if you don’t mind getting to Wellington about midnight. So yes, ambitious. Plus be aware that at this time of year the Tongariro crossing could have some serious (and fast changing) weather, so come prepared: remember it’s proper alpine country and give it the respect it deserves.

Other things worth seeing on that route:

Southwards Car Museum about an hour north of Wellington (you’ll pass it coming south)

Huka Falls just north of Taupo

Wellington has a good craft brewery scene if that’s your thing. Alternatively if you’re into wine, maybe divert east from Palmerston North and enter Wellington via the Wairarapa, which is premium pinot noir country.

Lake Taupo is a fun area. Wanna bungie jump off something? Or any of the other crazy shit you cant do at home? Here’s the place. Plenty of places with steam coming out of the ground. This is Surface of the moon park.
